The design

A meditation chair for the way you sit.

The Oyster Meditation Chair is an upholstered, backless seat designed for meditation, cross-legged sitting and everyday use. Its sculpted platform brings the support of a purpose-built meditation seat into the spaces where you read, reflect and work.

Meditation & everyday life

Your practice belongs in your life.

Oyster began as a dedicated meditation tool. We developed it into a full-height piece of furniture because a practice is easier to make part of daily life when the object that supports it belongs in the rooms you already use.

Use it as a meditation seat, a criss-cross chair, a place to journal or a sculptural accent chair. The generous platform leaves room to explore your preferred position, rather than prescribing a single way to sit.

A different place to work.

The same platform can be used for reading, creative work and time at a desk. An adjustable-height desk helps you fit the work surface to your seated position. Alternate positions and seating through the day as your routine requires.

Fine furniture, in daily use.

A sculptural form and a choice of upholstery allow the chair to live in a home office, living room or dedicated meditation space. It is an object to keep close, rather than put away between practices.

More than one sitting position.

The chair accommodates cross-legged or criss-cross sitting, upright meditation, modified kneeling, side-saddle sitting, one leg up and feet-on-floor sitting. Position and comfort depend on the individual; the open form gives you room to adjust.

Why it works

The geometry of support.

Developed with exercise physiologist Jesse Schwartzman, the chair considers the relationship between the pelvis, legs and upper body. Its firm seat and open geometry are designed to support an upright posture while leaving room for small adjustments.

Support beneath the sit bones.

The sculpted base centers support beneath the pelvis and sit bones, sometimes called SITS bones. The custom-formulated foam provides a firm foundation rather than a deep, sinking cushion.

Room for the hips.

The seat geometry is designed to allow hip rotation and a position in which the knees can rest below the hips. This relationship is central to the chair’s approach to upright, backless sitting.

Space beneath the thighs.

A gap beneath the thighs reduces continuous contact with the seat and leaves room for the legs to move. The vertical drop and recessed foot well are part of that open sitting platform.

Small, natural adjustments.

The chair allows subtle changes of position instead of holding the body against a fixed backrest. This freedom to shift is what we mean by active sitting.

A considered firmness.

Molded foam gives the seat its consistent contours and supportive feel. The shape and the foam formulation were developed together, so the material is part of the sitting experience.

Adaptable support.

You do not have to sit cross-legged to use the chair. Explore a position that suits you, or add the optional matching booster set for extra cushioning beneath the seat, knees and feet.

The journey

One commission. Two years of development.

The project began with one person seeking the ultimate meditation experience. Designer and furniture maker Alex Muradian worked with exercise physiologist Jesse Schwartzman, MS, RD, ACSM CPT, to turn that individual request into the Oyster Meditation Chair.

Research, prototypes & refinement

Every curve was worked through.

The development explored how the pelvis tilts, how hip rotation changes a seated posture, where the sit bones need support and how small movements affect a longer sit.

Prototypes were tested with meditators in the United States and Costa Rica. Angles, curves and foam formulas were adjusted through repeated iterations. The aim was a form that looks simple because its details have been carefully resolved.

The care of studio furniture.

The chair is handmade in Westhampton Beach, bringing the studio’s custom furniture practice to a product for personal wellbeing. Molded polyurethane foam, memory foam, a plywood interior structure and upholstery work together to create its shape and feel.

Basket Weave offers a tailored woven finish, Métaphores a textured micro bouclé, and Loro Piana an alpaca-linen upholstery. For a particular material or a commercial project, our studio can discuss a custom fabric specification.

“Healthy posture feels effortless when the geometry is doing the invisible work.”

Before you choose

Meditation Chair questions, answered.

Can I sit cross-legged in the Oyster Meditation Chair?

Yes. Cross-legged, or criss-cross, sitting is one of the positions the chair was designed around. Its generous contoured platform supports the pelvis while leaving space for the knees and feet. You can also sit upright, with your feet on the floor, side-saddle or with one leg raised.

What is active sitting?

Active sitting allows small changes in posture rather than keeping the body in one fixed position. The Oyster Meditation Chair has a stable base and no backrest, with an open form that lets you adjust the position of your legs and torso.

Does it suit people who like to fidget or change position?

The open platform is intended to make changes of position easy. Its varied contours also offer different points of contact. People experience these sensations differently; the chair’s design offers choice rather than requiring one posture.

Can I use it as a desk chair?

Yes, it can be used at a desk as well as for meditation, reading and journaling. Match the desk height to your seated position; an adjustable desk gives you more flexibility. You may prefer to build up time in a backless seat gradually and rotate between the Oyster, another chair and standing.

How is it different from a meditation cushion?

A floor cushion and the Oyster offer different heights and forms of support. The Oyster is a raised, molded sitting platform with contours beneath the pelvis, space beneath the thighs and a recessed foot well. Its firm form and optional booster cushions let you explore support beyond a conventional flat cushion.

Compare a meditation chair with a floor cushion or a conventional chair.

Do I need to be flexible or sit in a lotus position?

No lotus position is required. The chair supports several sitting styles, including feet-on-floor and modified kneeling positions. Choose a position that feels comfortable rather than forcing a particular posture; our studio can help you discuss fit before ordering.

Can I meditate in a chair instead of on the floor?

Yes. Oyster was created as a meditation seat for people who want a supported, elevated place to practice. The intention is to give the body a comfortable place to settle so that the seat can become part of your routine.

Is it like sitting on a yoga ball?

Both offer an alternative to a conventional backed chair, but the structures are different. Oyster has a stable, sculpted base rather than a rolling or wobbling ball. Movement comes from adjusting your position on the seat.

Who designed the Meditation Chair?

Alex Muradian designed the chair in collaboration with exercise physiologist Jesse Schwartzman, MS, RD, ACSM CPT. Two years of development combined furniture making, repeated prototypes and an exploration of seated posture.

What is included in the matching booster set?

The optional set contains four removable cushions: one seat bolster, two knee bolsters and one foot bolster. It is sold separately and made in the fabric and color selected for your chair. You can add it in the configurator above.

Can I choose a custom fabric?

Yes. The online configurator offers Basket Weave, Métaphores and Loro Piana. For another fabric, contact our studio. Commercial orders require an RFQ so we can specify the appropriate fabric; website purchases do not include trade warranty coverage.

How much is shipping?

Shipping within the 48 contiguous U.S. states is a flat $200 per order for Meditation Chair and Circadia purchases. Standalone Booster Set orders ship free within those states. Shipping to all other destinations is quoted separately; contact our studio before ordering.

Where can I find information about HSA/FSA purchasing?
