The Oyster Listening Chair brings the care of fine furniture to that part of the experience. Developed with Brodmann Acoustics, it considers the surfaces around the listener as part of the acoustic environment.

Oyster Wellness and Brodmann Acoustics approached the chair through furniture design and acoustic design together. The collaboration brings specialist knowledge of sound to the material, form and detail of the seat.

That approach extends beyond how the chair looks in a music room. It considers where the listener sits, the surfaces close to the head and the relationship between comfort and sustained attention. The aim is a piece of furniture that belongs in the room and is conceived around the experience taking place there.

Acoustic design

Every curve with purpose.

The sculpted back, carved inner arms and upholstered panels grew from a specific question: how could a chair be designed around the act of listening? Several acoustic design strategies meet in the object’s construction.

Carved inner arms.

Non-parallel, wave-like surfaces are designed to scatter reflected sound, replacing broad, flat planes close to the listener with a varied geometry. The vertical carving gives the arms their distinctive rhythm.

This is furniture considered from the listening position outward: the surfaces closest to the listener are part of the design brief, alongside the chair’s appearance in the room.

Integrated treatments.

Soft, curved upholstered segments sit alongside exposed wood surfaces. This combination draws on the absorption and diffusion strategies used in architectural room treatments.

The recesses between panels, rounded transitions and compound curves bring acoustic intent into the construction of the furniture. The form is designed around reflection management without closing off the front of the seat.

A high, radiused back.

The gently reclined back and rounded transitions are designed around managing reflections near the listening position. Its open front preserves the relationship between the listener and the room.

A considered listening position.

A relaxed, upright posture is central to the seat’s design. The chair is intended as a place to settle into an album or an extended listening session, with the comfort and presence of fine furniture.

Part of the whole room.

Speaker placement, the listening position and the room’s surfaces remain part of the experience. The chair brings another element into that conversation rather than replacing the consideration of the space around it.
