What Is Oyster Wellness?
By Alex Muradian, Founder & Lead Designer
Hi, I’m Alex Muradian, founder and lead designer at Oyster Wellness.
I wanted to start our first blog post by introducing what we do and what makes us unique.
Oyster Wellness is a furniture design firm and manufacturer focused on creating furniture that helps people relax, recover, unwind, and feel better. In short, we create furniture that supports both mental and physical well-being.
The Need for Wellness Furniture
As mental health, preventative healthcare, and recovery have become part of everyday conversation, countless new technologies have emerged to measure our bodies. But few companies are asking a more fundamental question: what about the objects and furniture we use during those moments of care and recovery?
That’s where Oyster Wellness comes in.
We design products that remove barriers to wellness practice. Our furniture is durable enough for public and corporate use, yet beautiful and comfortable enough for home. As wellness rooms, meditation corners, and recovery spaces become more common, people quickly realize there is a limited selection of furniture truly designed for those purposes.
Our work goes beyond ergonomics, addressing stress, recovery, and mindfulness through expert-led design and material choices.
A New Category: Wellness Furniture
You might ask, how can a chair or table do all this?
We’re pioneering an emerging category often called wellness furniture. These are products intentionally designed around specific wellness routines.
Take meditation as an example. We collaborated with experts in both meditation and ergonomics to develop the Oyster Wellness & Meditation Seat, designed to allow users to sit comfortably for extended periods. It supports 95% of body types, is easy to use for beginners, and supportive for advanced practitioners.
We apply this same principle to every product, a process we call problem-led design. When someone identifies a point of friction—perhaps they want to meditate but experience hip pain, or an audiophile wants a chair designed with the same precision as their loudspeakers—we decide if we can help. Then we collaborate with domain experts to understand exactly what is needed.
From there, we explore materials, processes, and forms that are manufacturable, sustainable, iconic, and true to the practice they serve.
Rooted in Craftsmanship
Our roots in fine furniture making give us a unique advantage.
Oyster Wellness can produce custom pieces tailored to the diverse needs of wellness and recovery rooms across workplaces and institutions, while maintaining the craftsmanship and longevity expected of heirloom-quality furniture.
Every object that leaves our workshop is held to the same rigorous standards as our custom pieces, giving you the confidence that your investment will last for generations.
We believe that the most sustainable piece of furniture is one you can pass down, a piece that lives with you and your space.
Sustainability by Design
Sustainability is built into every stage of our design process.
Take the Oyster Wellness Seat. To reduce virgin foam use, we offer a comprehensive reupholstery program. When fabric wears or tastes change, only the textile layer is replaced while the structure and foam remain intact. This lowers both environmental impact and your long-term cost of ownership.
For products at the end of their life cycle, we help facilitate local recycling so that materials can be responsibly repurposed.
Our next product, the Oyster Listening Chair, pushes sustainability even further. Every component, from the wood and foam to the fabric, is 100% recycled and plastic-free, meeting our heritage benchmarks while using zero virgin materials.
Looking Ahead
Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more about our products, processes, and philosophy, from how we test comfort and acoustics to how we think about wellness rooms as a whole.
We’re building a new design language for well-being, and we’re excited to bring you along as the story unfolds.
